Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral but is extremely rare and expensive, so most of the moissanites available for modern jewellery are lab-grown silicon carbide stones, an affordable alternative to conventional mined diamonds.
However, despite their differing origins, diamonds and moissanites have plenty in common. Here we explain how moissanite compares to diamonds.
Perhaps the biggest advantage of moissanite over diamonds is the price, for moissanite is considerably cheaper than a diamond. A diamond’s price varies based on cut, clarity, carat, and other individual characteristics like setting. However, moissanite stones are usually the same price and will vary incrementally with the size and shape of the stone.
As the hardest naturally occurring mineral, diamonds are known for their durability and can withstand almost any kind of wear and tear, making them the perfect choice for everyday wear, especially for an engagement ring.
However, moissanite doesn’t fall far behind. The second hardest to diamonds on the Mohs hardness scale, based on rankings from one to 10, moissanite sits at 9.25-9.5 and diamonds are a 10. This makes moissanite a very durable option for an engagement ring since, like diamond, it doesn’t scratch easily.
The most obvious difference between moissanite and diamonds is their brilliance. In general, moissanite may have more brilliance than a diamond, meaning it has more sparkle. Moissanite also has a greater fire (or display of spectral colours) that is visible when you rotate the stone. The result is a rainbow-like effect, while diamonds reflect whiter light.
