A hallmark is a set of component marks applied to articles of precious metals (gold, silver, platinum or palladium) which mean that the article has been independently tested and guarantees it conforms to all legal standards of purity (fineness).
We apply the Full Traditional UK Hallmark as standard, which guarantees the provenance of the article by telling us where the piece was hallmarked, what the article is made from, and who sent the article for hallmarking.
The Full Traditional Hallmark comprises five marks:
• Sponsor’s mark – compulsory
• Traditional fineness mark
• Millesimal fineness mark – compulsory
• Assay Office mark – compulsory
• Date letter mark
Unless otherwise stated, this is the standard mark we apply.
Some of our collections carry pieces that require a hallmark to provide you with a guarantee of their provenance and metal fineness. All hallmarks are applied in an area not visible to you when you wear it (e.g. to the back or inside band of your jewellery).
Please note that these items will have a longer processing time as they must be sent to the London Assay office for testing and the application of the hallmark. This process typically takes 2-3 weeks, but during the festive season, this process can take between 4-6 weeks due to an increased volume.
To keep our prices and production times to a minimum, we only apply hallmarks to items meeting the specified weight thresholds (1 gram for gold and 7.78 grams for silver). However, a hallmark can be applied to any other item purchased from us with our UK Hallmarking Service.
