Silver jewellery is the heart and soul of Becky’s Boutique. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, all of our silver jewellery is beautifully crafted in 925 sterling silver making it extremely durable and treasured for a long time. Even our gold vermeil jewellery is exclusively 925 sterling silver too, plated with a thick layer of 18ct gold.
Silver is often associated with the moon and known for its positive influence on fertility and emotional stability. The moon helps to brighten the darkness of the night and allows a person to see more clearly. Silver’s lunar association will help the wearer channel the ability to see with clarity and attract positive energy even in the darkest of times.
One of the first precious metals to be discovered, silver was used as currency throughout history and was highly treasured for its use in jewellery by many different cultures.
More reactive than gold and harder to extract from its ores when mined, the supply of silver was significantly rare in ancient times which meant that it was more expensive than gold until the Egyptians discovered new ways of refining it around 1500 BC.
Sterling silver is an alloyed form of pure silver which is much more suitable to use in jewellery and other metalwork.
Fine silver is 99.9% pure silver. In this form, the metal is beautiful and suffers from minimal tarnish but it’s generally too soft and malleable for many uses, including making most items of jewellery.
Instead, fine silver is alloyed with a small amount of copper to create sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. This percentage of fine silver is why you will sometimes see sterling silver referred to as ‘925 silver’ or marked with a 925 stamp.
The copper makes the silver harder, more durable, and therefore, much better to work with and use without compromising on colour. Most silver jewellery that you buy and wear today will be sterling silver.
We think silver jewellery is the perfect accessory for any occasion. Whether you’re dressing up for a fancy dinner date or chilling with friends at home, silver jewellery adds the perfect finishing touch. Some of our favourite silver pieces include the Satellite Beaded Chain, Chunky Maxi Hoop Earrings and the Wide Hammered Ring.
Remember to take care of your sterling silver jewellery and you’ll be able to treasure it for many years to come.
Our top tip? Try to avoid water, which will cause your silver jewellery to oxidise. Interestingly, the oils in your skin help to reduce the oxidising of the silver so wear it often and keep in your jewellery box when you’re switching up your look.
Like gold, silver will also maintain its value – and possibly even increase in value – over time in comparison to other commodities. It is also endlessly recyclable and the metal can be reused in many forms.
