Waterproof Jewellery: The Myths, Facts & Care Tips

The term “waterproof” has become a bit of a buzzword in the last year or two…but what does it actually mean?

Is it just a gimmick, or can jewellery really be worn in water?

In this post, we look at the most common myths about waterproof jewellery—and help you curate a durable, tarnish-resistant collection you can wear with minimal care.

Myth: All water is safe.
Fact: Some water contains harmful chemicals.

To be clear: jewellery is waterproof, not chemical proof.

Chlorine swimming pools and hot tubs are loaded with chemicals that can damage or tarnish your jewellery—and the same goes for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, skincare products, and fragrances with chemical additives. Even the beach isn’t your jewellery’s best friend as sand can create micro-scratches on your favourite pieces!

The safest option is to remove your jewellery in case it comes in contact with any harsh chemicals or wearing gloves to protect your rings while cleaning. And when in doubt, rinse it off—a splash of clean water and a quick dry (with a soft, clean cloth) will make it sparkle and shine.

Myth: “Waterproof” also means “sweat proof.”
Fact: Sweat is an acid and can tarnish some metals.

When we sweat, our body is ridding itself of excess fats, fatty acids and amino acids which can tarnish certain metals. Some metals can also naturally corrode in the presence of moisture, but simply take off your gold filled, gold vermeil or sterling silver pieces before a workout, and wipe down your always-on solid gold pieces afterward, to maintain their shine.

Myth: I must sacrifice quality for waterproof jewellery.
Fact: No, we’ve got you!

Our jewellery is tarnish-resistant and long-lasting when it’s cared for properly! While there has been a wave of new brands offering tarnish-free, waterproof jewellery made from stainless steel, our high-quality gold filled, sterling silver and solid gold pieces are waterproof too—you just need to show them a little extra love now and then.

Myth: Caring for jewellery is hard.
Fact: It’s actually really easy—and we’ll show you how!

Caring for solid gold:

For truly effortless upkeep, do yourself a solid 18ct (or 9ct)! Handcrafted using the lowest-maintenance, most water-resistant precious metals, our solid 18ct & 9ct gold jewellery will last a lifetime (and then some!) as it’s truly tarnish-free. Chlorinated waters can add a dull film to solid 18ct & 9ct gold jewellery, so it’s always best to remove it to keep its sensational shine.

Caring for gold filled:

Made by heat- and pressure-bonding a thick layer of 14ct gold to a high-quality brass core, this option is exceptionally durable, hypoallergenic and perfect for daily wear with minimal upkeep. Remove your pieces in chlorine and saltwater, but showers are fine—just no harsh chemicals, please, and remember to dry them off properly after!

Caring for gold Vermeil:

A thick layer of gold over a sterling silver core, gold vermeil is another hypoallergenic metal we love. You’ll want to look after these more than you would gold filled pieces as this layer of gold isn’t pressure-bonded. Keep these pieces away from harsh chemicals, skincare products and fragrances, and be sure to gently dry them off immediately after any contact with water.

Caring for Sterling Silver:

Sterling silver jewellery loves to be worn—the oils in our skin naturally clean and shine them up! Much like gold filled, showers & gentle soaps won’t harm these hypoallergenic pieces; in fact, they can actually help remove any built-up residue. But stay away from hot tubs & pools when wearing sterling silver, as they can discolour the metal and it may require more upkeep.

Sometimes jewellery just takes a little bit of work to keep it looking beautiful—but what’s more meaningful than caring for something you love?

Polish your pieces with a soft cloth, keep them stored away from humidity and excess moisture (like steamy bathrooms) and wear them daily with delight.
